AVENUE STAGE: BLACK GIRLS ROCK AWARDS 2009!

Avenue Pink covered and attended the annual awards reception for Beverly Bond's non-profit organization, Black Girls Rock! It took place at the newly built and very gorgeous venue, The Times Square Center in New York City this past weekend. Eight women (and one man--Anthony Hamilton) were honored for their charitable and influential efforts in empowering women of color. Here is a list of the honorees and the awards they received:

Community Outreach Award: DR. MEHRET MANDEFRO

Fashionista Award: NAOMI CAMPBELL

Jazzy Joyce DJ Award: DJ SPINDERELLA

Shot Caller Award: IYANLA VAZANT

Who Got Next? Award: JANELLE MONAE

Soul Brother #1 Award: ANTHONY HAMILTON

Rock Star Award: RAVEN SYMONE

Living Legend Award: SONIA SANCHEZ

Rock Star Award: QUEEN LATIFAH

Icon Award: MARY J. BLIGE


Traci Ellis Ross and Regina King were also in attendance as the hosts and kept the laughs going for the whole night. Melanie Fiona performed one of her soul-filled records before Janelle Monae impressed the crowd with her footwork and vocals against an acoustic guitar. The Black Girls Rock! program participants sang an original a capella piece accompanied with poetry. Doug E. Fresh presented an award for his long time friend Queen Latifah and ROCKED the house with some old school jams. The theater was filled with so much talent on Saturday night!
