Honey Magazine took on the humble duty of gathering single, New York City based women at Taj Lounge this past Valentine’s Day weekend. The booming online publication featured Bre Scullark from America’s Next Top Model and empowerment specialist /author/ Men’s Fitness Magazine columnist Sil Lai Abrams, both sharing personal testimonies about dealing with challenges of romance.
Malikaha Mallet from urban radio station 105.1 hosted the event and geared up the audience before the invited guests spoke. She was also unafraid of jumping in and lending her perspectives to questions with complicated answers.
Bre started off with her story about pursuing modeling after a bad breakup. “I went through a several bottles of wine,” she admitted. Yet that did not stop the Harlem native from getting signed to a three-region contract with Ford Models, hosting video segments for Tyra TV and getting her driver’s license right before moving cross-country to Los Angeles.
Sil Lai followed by introducing her segment with an edited video reel describing her tumultuous past of alcohol addiction, violent relationships with a boyfriend and other failed relationships. She started off her discussion with the declaration, “I am a recovering drama queen.” After opening up the audience to sharing similarities in her life that may mirror her own, Sil Lai shared her latest project as a great first step leading to a solution—her book “No More Drama: Nine Simple Steps to Transforming A Breakdown into a Breakthrough.” The red cover has bright white lettering and includes a quote from Tavis Smiley praising her work.
Ms. Abrams uses nine main steps that can lead the reader in the right direction known as SEPIA, or Self Empowerment Principles in Action Process. She touched on the tendency people have in using relationships to complete themselves then mentioned Alexander McQueen (she also wore a dress in his honor.). Sil Lai explained how his life spiraled out of control with the recent passing of his mother and getting dumped by his boyfriend. She further stressed the importance of getting professional help before getting into the same emotional state that caused the designer to take away his life.
Sil Lai’s effect on the audience was apparent as the questions rolled in for about a half hour. She answered each carefully, always remembering to bridge her statements with a concept linked to self-preservation. Soon afterwards, attendees mingled and networked while Sil Lai signed copies of her book, discounted at ten dollars each.
