STEP UP WOMEN'S NETWORK - HOLIDAY MEMBERSHIP EVENT: EVENTS ON THE AVE

Women’s empowerment has been a constantly recurring theme for the year of 2009. But never have I seen it executed so well until last night. The Los Angeles based Step Up Women’s Network held an annual Holiday Membership Event at the New York City industry hotspot M2 Lounge Tuesday evening. Thousands of women filled the large venue, networking while eating Pop Burgers for dinner and washing it down with the finest glasses of liquor.

Speakers from the organization addressed the crowd, explaining the initiatives of the organization that mentors adult women to mentor young girls. They want to sync the two ever-evolving groups so that both can learn lessons from each other. The adult groups are introduced to influential figures as well as high-profile events in their respective industries, teaching them to enjoy and take full advantage of these resources. Membership is required for access, and the annual fees range from fifty to a thousand dollars.

These membership fees fund several of the programs for the young group of ladies which also enjoy a very hands-on approach to career mentorship. One great example is Maggie-zine, which is a print magazine created by 12 year old Editor-in-Chief Maggie Hemphill. Her impressive work was developed with the extensive guidance and input of IMG Fashion’s Senior Vice President, Fern Mallis, i.e. the woman who calls all the shots for Fashion Week every year. Talk about taking mentorship to the next level.

After the inspiring speech (and keeping a close eye on my Maggie-Zine which was in high demand after Fern and Maggie spoke), several ladies from fields ranging from healthcare to public relations exchanged business cards and discussed plans of collaboration. Avenue Pink was thrilled to be in the company of such progressive minds.

I’m going to buy my membership to such an inspiring, influential and well run organization. I hope you inquire and join as well! Log on to www.suwn.org to get more information about the Step Up Women’s Network.
